What little boy doesn't love dinosaurs and cookies?!

What little boy doesn’t love dinosaurs and cookies?!

My friend has been giving Ozzy books since before he was born.  She’s always so thoughtful about the ones she chooses.  Knowing that Ozzy and I love to cook together, she gave us this scratch-and-sniff dinosaur cookie book!

I’ve known this friend since sixth grade.  Now, she teaches sixth grade in addition to following her passion of becoming a children’s book author.  Her first book will be published soon.  It’s called “Bad Day, Go Away” and her name is Sarah Canter.  You should follow her on Twitter.  Just sayin’.

Anyway, the boys and I read this after school recently and as we finished it, Ozzy said he wanted to make cookies. (Duh!) So we did. 🙂

Danny watched from his chair across the kitchen and Ozzy did the stirring up on the counter.

…Oh, the next day the book was still on the counter and Josh was wondering about this picture…

Anyone have an explanation?

Haha… anyone have an explanation?

Ingredients:

  • 1 c butter, softened
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1 c packed brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 t vanilla extract
  • 1 T honey
  • 1 t salt
  • 1 t baking soda
  • 1 T cinnamon
  • ¼ t ground nutmeg
  • ¼ t pumpkin pie spice
  • 2 c flour
  • 3 c oats

Instructions:

  1. Stir the butter and sugars together.
  2. Add each ingredient in order, mixing well each time.
  3. Roll the dough into small balls and flatten them a little bit.
  4. Place them on a cookie sheet and bake for 9-12 minutes at 375° F.
  5. Let them cool 2 minutes before removing with a spatula.
  6. Cool completely on a wire rack.

Here are some ideas to get your “kid cook” involved with this recipe:

  • Give him a spatula and have him do the mixin’!
  • Use smaller than necessary measuring spoons and cups so that he can help count to a higher number as you add ingredients.  For example, use a ¼ t measuring spoon and count to 12 to add 1 T cinnamon.

This recipe is found in the book: How Do Dinosaurs Eat Cookies? By Jane Yolen & Mark Teague.  The book calls for 1/4 t ground cloves, but I didn’t have any so I used pumpkin pie spice and they were delicious!
